#24 Gemsbok at The Beautiful Time of Day winner of Botswana Wildlife Artist of the Year 2014

gemsbok oil painting of a solitary gemsbok walking

I spent some time in Khuste Game Park in the Central Kalahari, and saw a solitary gemsbok, which inspired this painting.

Gemsbok are lovely to paint because of their striking mixture of black, white and dove grey, as well as their sword-like horns.

I chose to paint this one in the last light of day. I remember hearing of an African saying that the last golden light of day is called ‘the time of the beautiful people’ because the light makes everyone look lovely.

It was awarded first place in 2014 in the ‘Realistic Wildlife Art’ category of the ‘Botswana Wildlife Artist of the Year’ held by Cameras for Conservation, and won overall winner that year.
